                                                About Brazilian Blow Outs

A Brazilian Blow Out is a luxurious keratin treatment designed to reduce unwanted volume, frizz  and unruly curls resulting in silky, shiny smoother hair.

A Brazilian Blow Out is neither a a traditional relaxer nor a straightener. In fact, there is nothing traditional about this new type of service. it does not involve harsh chemicals that can over process the hair and leave it in poor condition.

Brazilian keratin treatments are a universal product that can be used on any type of hair - dry, frizzy, over-processed, color treated, ethnic, or even unprocessed virgin hair.

The results are healthy, shiny, frizz-free, manageable hair.

                                How Does it Work?

Keratin is a type of protein containing high levels of the amino acid Cystine. This special amino acid is responsible for making hair super strong and extremely elastic. Keratin is the main, structure building protein in our hair and nails.

what is the benefit of this ingredient?

This unique extract is virtually a liquid form of hair that gently blends with the hair on your head to help restore what has been lost over time, and through chemical and environmental stress.

When applied to the hair, keratin extract fills in the gaps between the cuticle and inner shaft.
With the use of a high heat flat iron, the keratin becomes sealed into the hair's inner structure and creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle
helping to improve the quality of the hair from the inside out.

                                       Addressing the Myths

There has been an increasing amount of undeserved negative press focused on Brazilian hair treatments. This section will teach you the facts, which are based on reputable sources and scientific information.

There is widespread confusion in the professional beauty industry about Formaldehyde. This misunderstanding has been caused over a cosmetic ingredient called "Formalin." Until recently, product manufacturers were erroneously required to list "Formaldehyde" on the ingredient list if Formalin was used. This was particularly strange because Formaldehyde is a dry gas, while the ingredient Formalin is a liquid and has a completely different chemical structure.

Formalin is a liquid substance created by a chemical reaction between Formaldehyde gas and water. This very rapid chemical reaction creates a totally different substance called Formalin. As mentioned above, in the past, manufacturers were required to to call this ingredient "Formaldehyde," even though it is completely incorrect.

This error led to the widespread confusion about these types of products. Luckily, in December 2008 the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) requirements were changed, and now manufacturers must call Formalin by its true and proper name "methylene Glycol"

Now it is easy to see why some manufacturers say their products "contain Formaldehyde" while others claim to be "Formaldehyde Free." All along, each of these products has actually contained Methylene Glycol (Formalin) and not Formaldehyde. No cosmetic can contain Formaldehyde as an ingredient, since it is a gas that would rapidly escape from the bottle once it was opened.

In short, it is incorrect to say that any cosmetic contains Formaldehyde as an ingredient.

However, you will see in the next section that Formaldehyde does indirectly play an important role in the hair treatment process... even though it is not an ingredient.

Formaldehyde is a gas which is found throughout nature. Tiny traces of Formaldehyde can be found in apples, pears, radishes, cabbage, tomatoes, green onions, carrots and fish. Trace amounts can even be found normally circulating in human blood. It's a normal byproduct of human and animal metabolism. As long as Formaldehyde is at low levels, it is safe.

Brazilian keratin Treatments contain methylene Glycol (Formalin). Methylene Glycol performs two useful functions.

1) it is a very effective preservative that protects the quality of the keratin and prevents the growth of bacterial contamination. Keratin is a form of protein which bacteria will use as a food, so it is very important for your safety  that these products are properly preserved.

  2) When heated to high temperatures, Methylene Glycol releases very tiny amounts of Formaldehyde gas which is absorbed into the hair shaft and reinforces the keratin structure, making hair stronger, as well as smoother and healthier looking.

Independent Laboratory studies show that when used with appropriate ventilation, cosmetologists are not exposed to unsafe levels of Formaldehyde or any other ingredient.

OSHA has established that the allowable safe level or permissible exposure limit (PEL) of Formaldehyde gas for an eight hour work day is 0.75 ppm.
Typically, Cosmetologists exposures are far less than 0.50 ppm which is well bellow the OSHA permissible exposure limit.

To ensure your safety is our first concern. At Haven Salon we have received specialized training on the proper application of these professional products.  This is why these products are not sold to the public. These products are only available for use by licensed Cosmetologists that understand how to use the products safely.
